God of High School: Another Webnovel Anime Adaptation

Korean webnovels have been on the rise in the anime industry this year. With the first season of Tower of God coming to an end with quite the cliffhanger, another one of the big webnovels has hit Crunchyroll. That anime is God of High School. God of High School is a super power anime that has been running as a webnovel for several years and has a strong and devoted fanbase behind it.

Out the gate, the God of High School anime starts of with scenes take straight from the webnovel. This cannot be said for all anime series. The animation has a dynamic kick-off which is no surprise considering the high quality of other Crunchyroll original anime series such as In Spectre and Tower of God. The lighting in every seen is exceptional. In fact, the lighting and animation quality is up there with anime films such as A Silent Voice (Koe No Katachi) and Your Name (Kimi No Nawa). This is an anime series that MAPPA has taken the time to refine and polish.

The essential plotline of the series is reminiscent of a common plot point in many Shonen anime series because each character is attempting to become the world’s strongest through a martial arts tournament. Therefore, there is no doubt there is some powerful influence from Dragon Ball Z. However, that is not a bad thing to say as Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were series that set the standard for Shonen anime.

The action sequences are breathtaking as they suck the viewer into the world and you begin to sync with the protagonist. The action was constant; however, it was not too-fast paced. Like Dragon Ball Z, the show demonstrates light yet sometimes hysterical humor during the combat scenes, which there are several upon several incredible combat scenes within the first episode.

Although the anime does not match each scene from the first several chapters, or episodes as they are called in webnovels, the anime still manages to hit each important detail of the source material to some extent. Because God of High School is one of the longest running webnovels, it makes sense for a studio to compress plot and/or character development points. However, people who were fans of God of High School before the anime premiered might not be to fond of these small edits. This leads me to the question: “Has there ever been an anime adapted directly and perfectly from the source material?” Well, I have not seen it.

This anime has everything a person could want in an anime from the first episode. There is action, drama, adventure and comedy demonstrated throughout the entirety of the anime. If you love super powered anime series such as DBZ and Bleach, then this is hands down an anime for you. The first episode of God of High School released July 6, 2020. Webnovels are making a strong stand in the anime community this year. With the global COVID-19 pandemic going on, it is great that there is still superb anime in production. God of High School shows great promise in becoming the next Dragon Ball Z.
